It was a fantastic and productive year for the BSM Speech Team. We had many astounding results, coming from seventh graders to seniors. The many hours spent practicing and reciting led up to a huge tournament at the end of each week. The team traveled to all corners of Minnesota, from Forest Lake to Apple Valley. The major time commitment proved to be challenging, but BSM students love the early morning bus rides and seven hour competitions.

BSM offers over a dozen speech categories, ranging from personal address categories like informative speaking, to interpretation categories like dramatic and humorous. The contestants perform their speeches a total of three or four times each competition, depending on how well the speaker performs. There are five or six other competitors in each room, and scoring is 1-5, with 1 being the best and 5 the worst. Depending on how well a competitor does, s/he has the opportunity to compete in the final round. Usually a score of at least 2-2-2 will get a contestant into the final round. All contestants who compete in the final round will win an award. BSM has won various team awards at tournaments, and the success is bound to continue next year.

Several junior highers love speech. The current junior high students who competed are Breah Banks, Maya Argenta, Ronan Brew, Harry Madden, and Gus Pirkl. All of the members loved the activity, and they will be returning next year. A couple of amazing results came from junior highers this year: Harry Madden got an honorable mention in his category, Great Speeches, in the Centennial Cougar Tournament; Breah Banks got a 2 ranking in one of her rounds in the same competition; and Ronan Brew won second place in the varsity level at the Eagan Speech Tournament. It was a fantastic year for all of the BSM Junior High Speech participants.

However, the awards is not what BSM Speech is about. Speech team members have a fun time and travel to various places. They experience a long and fruitful season filled with many fun rounds and competitions. Many will say that it is their favorite activity at BSM.
