Boys’ Silver Soccer and Year-End Tournament
The silver soccer team’s season may have wrapped up, but the season supplied the players with lasting memories that may never be forgotten. The Silver Team finished with four wins, six losses, and one tie after the regular season with some very well-played games and some not so well-played ones. They managed to earn a spot in the top tournament for the league but lost what turned out to be their last game of the year.
The year-end tournament consisted of five teams: Annunciation, Calvin Christian, Nativity, St. John’s, and BSM Silver. In the first game Annunciation beat BSM by a score of 4-0. Later, St. John’s and Nativity won their semifinal games to set up the championship match.
In the final, both teams got of to quick starts, but neither team scored early on. Then about halfway through the first half, #20 on St. John’s took on and beat two defenders before finding a low corner and scoring the first goal of the game. Almost right after, he had another opportunity but this time was stopped before he could take a shot. At half time St. John’s had a 1-0 lead over Nativity. Minutes into the second half, a Nativity player got a shot from the top of the box, but the St. John’s goalie made a fantastic save knocking it out of bounds. Each team continued to have more opportunities but no goals. With about fifteen minutes left in the game, a Nativity player shot it from about 30 yards away and it went over the goalie’s head into the goal to tie the game. Now with only five minutes left, Nativity scored on a breakaway to take the 2-1 lead and held control for the rest of the game. Nativity put in one last goal with seconds left to clinch the game. All the players started cheering as they received trophies and went home with the title of champions.
The 2014 soccer season was definitely a blast. Sports are about having fun and I’m sure that every player on every team had at least one moment during the season that they enjoyed.
