“The BSM Junior High Girls’ Soccer program is great because there is always a wide range of talent, from those who play on elite club teams to those who have not played soccer much at all,” said Betsy Van Cleve.

The 2017-2018 BSM Girls’ Soccer Team consisted of ten seventh graders and nine eighth graders and kicked off their season winning the first five games! This team was coached by Van Cleve, who said “This is my first year as head coach of the Junior High girls team. I was a head coach at another local Catholic grade school for 5 years previous to my responsibilities at BSM. I am an alum of the BSM Girls’ Soccer program and love being able to share my passion for soccer and BSM with the junior high girls team.”

Eighth grader Cassi Gonyea talked about her experience on the team. “My experience with the team has been awesome! I love playing junior high soccer because there are so many of my friends on the team, and everyone on the team is always so nice and fun.” Cassi was a great wing and who has had many assists and goals.

BSM soccer has improved my skills! I have been making better passes and have gotten better at ball handling. I also have made so many new friends,” said seventh grader Juliet Walesch, when asked how being on the team has improved her skills.

Ava Mullen warms up for practice with another player.

“We outscored our opponents 69-18 this year and have had multiple shutouts,” Van Cleve said.

The team has incredible skills and put them to good use by winning their SSYO tournament on 10/28/17! They faced OLG in their first game and won 6-0. Their second game was against Minnehaha, a very close match. The Red Knights edged them out with a score of 1-0. “Our BSM team is led by 8th-grade captains Avery Junker, Tilly Wolfe, and Cassi Gonyea.” Van Cleve said. Tilly Wolfe scored the final goal, and Natalie Tennessen was the flawless keeper in the net. Although it was cold and the ground was frozen, the girls pushed through and were victorious. After that, they took on St. Croix Catholic on 11/02/17 but, unfortunately, lost to them in a shootout. As a member of the team, I think that the team’s attitude and skill are amazing in all positions. The team had a phenomenal season and that was incredibly successful!
